Verdict

SAINT ARCH deserves this step up in grade after a cosy win last time and he is fancied to see off Captain Ramius and Sohcahtoa. To use the old cliche, the selection is a typical Mark Johnston horse; a good-looker who battles hard when the chips are down and the gelding looks progressive. He is yet to taste defeat and from a good draw here he may take some pegging back. Captain Ramius is penalised for a Listed win at Dundalk last season and that makes life tougher; the former Mark Wallace inmate is stepping up in trip today and that is not necessarily sure to suit this son of Kheylef. Shampagne was not disgraced here last time when beaten two lengths behind Mafaaz in the Kentucky Derby trial, and he has a fine all-weather strike-rate. Sohcahtoa was third in that race and looked as if he might improve for the run. Considering he gave it such a bold go from the front it was a fine reappearance. The market may help guide to Mishrif and Pure Poetry on their return. They were both fairly lightly raced at two and the former looks more interesting as he looks sure to get this mile and further this season whereas with Pure Poetry there is more guess-work. Viva Ronaldo takes on tougher company than in the north last season and so he is passed over in favour of Saint Arch.
