In depth

Verdict

Whispered Secret lines up fit and fancied and should complete a hat-trick at the expense of Duke of Buckingham and Peccadillo. It would appear folly to look elsewhere than Martin Pipe's challenger as the answer on the evidence so far, the six-year-old having proved to be a model of consistency this season. Successful over hurdles here in June, he has taken well to fences, and won with a great deal of authority at Newton Abbot at the end of last month. He might not have beaten much, but the way that he galloped on through a heavy rain storm showed his resilience, and if Tony McCoy decides to go out in front today, it is hard to see anything in this line-up pegging him back. Duke of Buckingham is not the horse that he promised to be as a novice but has performed well of late and can again be in the shake-up along with Peccadillo, winner of this race twice and a horse that goes well fresh. He will have been well prepared again, but this looks safely left to Whispered Secret.
