In depth
Verdict
EXGRAY showed plenty of promise last month and is fancied to get off the mark in this company. Waveband is an interesting newcomer from a top yard, so merits respect; while Dower Glen would be dangerous to rule out even though she was disappointing when dropped in grade at Musselburgh last time out. The last named has experience of this course and, as she likes to bowl along in front; she would be a big threat if she is allowed an easy lead. The Mark Johnston-trained Waveband looks the part on paper and is hardly thrown in at the deep end for her introduction to racing. Being by crack Australian sprinter Exceed And Excel, Johnston's filly can be expected to cope with the trip and, as she has numerous entries for later in the season, it is safe to assume she will enjoy a well-planned campaign if she produces the goods today. Her odds may be a little cramped for a debutante, though. Therefore, it can also pay to factor in a small investment with Exgray, who has the benefit of experience and was far from disgraced when she was narrowly beaten by Capercaillie (subsequently fourth in the Queen Mary at Ascot) at Musselburgh in May. The manner of that debut run created a favourable impression and Exgray is expected to be a lot wiser ahead this afternoon's test.
