In depth

Verdict

Irish Derby winner Santiago landed the Queen’s Vase over 1m6f on his seasonal reappearance. There should be no stamina doubts here and he is the young pretender the staying crown but he is tackling the leading stayer of a generation in STRADIVARIUS. The three-times Ascot Gold Cup winner has also taken this Group 1 in each of the last three years and he looked better than ever at the Royal meeting last month when quickening 10 lengths clear of Nayef Road. The others are probably playing for places with Sandown runner-up Spanish Mission preferred to York winner Eagles By Day, who is trying 2m for the first time.
