In depth

Verdict

Deepwater Bay may find the improvement needed to lower the colours of Final Verse, with Red Somerset and Antica worth a mention at least in this Listed event. Andrew Balding has always had a very high opinion of Deepwater Bay who justified his trainer's faith when duly making a winning return at Kempton, beating another Stoute hotpot funnily enough, in the shape of Escape Clause. Deepwater Bay was always going well and pounced on the odds-on favourite inside the final furlong to score readily, the only surprise being his starting price of 13-2. The son of Chester House is ready for this step up to a mile, and connections hope that he will prove good enough en-route to a crack at the St James' s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. Final Verse also holds that lofty entry, and with the Stoute stable firing on all cylinders, will have plenty of supporters too. A half-brother to nine winners no less, the son of Mark Of Esteem proved that he had trained on when beaten less than six lengths by George Washington in the 2,000 Guineas, and his ability to handle the ground is not in question judged by his good effort when second to Hurricane Cat in last year's Horris Hill at Newbury. At the likely forecast odds though he represents no value and is worth taking on. Red Somerset is potentially unexposed, while Antica lost no caste in defeat behind Levera at York and gets the fillies' allowance. They can make a race of it, but we hope to see Deepwater Bay go on to bigger and better things.
