Brian Ellison sends LAKEMAN a long way down from Norton for this nursery handicap but the expenses may be in the bag if the likes of High Alert, Battle Of Hastings and Lethal Gaze fail to show progress in this typically tricky nursery. Lethal Gaze has experience of the course and comes here on the back of an encouraging effort at Salisbury 19 days ago. A handicap mark of 68 is hardly a restrictive standard and the Richard Hannon-trained colt makes appeal to be involved in the scrap for one of the places at least. Battle Of Hastings had mixed form prior to wining a similar race at Newmarket last month. His confidence will have been boosted no end by that effort and, assuming it wasn't just a flash in the pan, Michael Bell's charge can also play strong role this afternoon. High Alert looked a decent prospect when he breezed to victory on his debut on the All Weather track at Lingfield in July. But he was slightly disappointing when he failed to sparkle when attempting to follow up at Hamilton last time out. Still, it would be very harsh to write him off just yet and this son of Kyllachy will be a serious threat if he handles the demands of Goodwood this afternoon. However, these races are never straightforward and it can pay to side with a proven battler when push comes to shove. Lakeman certainly fits that profile and, with the ground not expected to be a problem, the North Yorkshire raider looks worth punting at the likely odds. (Tony Whitfield)
