Verdict

By Degree met a couple of very smart horses on his last two runs, and a reproduction of the form he showed there should be good enough to get him off the mark here. On his last start, Ron Hodges' gelding chased home the unbeaten Murphys Cardinal, with subsequent winner Iceberge 22 lengths behind in third place, and it is unlikely that anything of the winner's calibre is in this field. Paul Nicholls' Silver Birch has done little wrong in winning his last two races, but has not beaten much in the process and will find it tough giving 12 lbs to the selection. Majestic Bay reverts to hurdles after a couple of fair runs over fences, but looks relatively exposed at this sphere and has a bit to find. The other three make little appeal.
