      Verdict

      Thunderball may be up to landing this opening maiden for Alan McCabe, while Royal Executioner and Doctor Crane are others to consider. The selection has had just the one run so far when beaten over nine lengths in a maiden here over 6f in May. The form of that race has worked out pretty well, with the winner Himalya having gone on to finish fourth in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, and with this step up in trip likely to bring improvement, we'll side with the colt. Royal Executioner has also had a run over 6f on fast ground at Salisbury and was beaten 10 lengths. It wasn't a bad effort for a first run, and he looks sure to come on for it, especially now also stepped up in distance. Doctor Crane has the sort of US dirt pedigree that suggests that the fast ground here might be a bit too lively for him, but we won't know for sure if he handles it until it's too late. He should be at home as far as trip is concerned, though John Gosden's strike rate with his two-year-olds is only seven per cent and he is no cert. Tim Easterby has a very interesting newcomer here in Pilot Light who is by the brilliant Falbrav out of Bollin Jeannie, a half-sister to Leger winner Bollin Eric. He should get plenty further in time and it is hard to see him winning on debut even over this trip. Thunderball is the suggestion here.
