Verdict
Any number of possible winners in the first race of the flat season proper, and from a 'shortlist' of Billy Dane, Kiwi Bay, Conry and LAUDATORY it's the last named who gets the vote. Walter Swinburn's charged looked promising on more than one occasion last season, particularly when winning on his comeback run off 77. He's not had many chances on turf and as his sire won on good to soft he should cope with the ground, so off what remains a fair mark he's taken to go close at a nice each-way price. Kiwi Bay heads the long list of dangers having been beaten narrowly when last seen. He has winning form over a mile, acts with cut and represents a yard that does well here so with Tom Eaves up he's got to be considered. Similar comments apply to the consistent Billy Dane, although there are two big concerns as to his chance; one is that his winning form has largely come on good or faster and the second is that he's been creeping up the weights in defeat. That said, his chance is respected as is that of Conry, who should stay the mile fine and likes cut in the ground. Dhaular Dhar is an admirable sort who can usually be relied upon to run his race, but his best efforts have come elsewhere so whilst the yard are in form he's opposed along with Chosen Forever who looks too high in the weights following a good run over the winter. Audemar would be interesting if this were on an artificial surface but it isn't and his efforts on turf so far don't match those on the all weather, so of more interest is Captain Macarry. John Quinn's gelding does have to prove he truly gets a mile, but if he does then a bold show is likely. Tartan Gunna has plenty of weight but must be considered nonetheless for Mark Johnston whose yard have been mopping up on the all weather this winter, but this race could go to Walter Swinburn's Laudatory at a price.
