In depth

Verdict

In the nursery, Russian Reel is selected ahead of Victorian Bounty and Sudden Impact. Victorian Bounty has been running well on the all-weather but his maiden win came on Turf so he should have more to offer on grass and he is well drawn. The drop back from six furlongs last time should also help today. Sudden Impact came good at Thirsk last time, showing plenty of speed in the process, having been overfaced in a Listed race (where she got struck into) and Royal Ascot. Russian Reel was not beaten that far despite finishing fifteenth in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot (where he finished ahead of Sudden Impact) and followed that up with a very good second over six furlongs here on heavy going to the decent La Chicaluna (who will by now have run at Goodwood on Friday). This is her level for now and she can go well. Thunder Bay was showing promise earlier in the season but has been off since May so that might count against him. Of the others, Mister Christie won well at Beverley last time and is on the up but has a wide draw to contend with. All of which returns us to the selection, which is Russian Reel.
