In depth

Verdict

Perfect Arch beat only one home at Chelmsford on his final start last year and has been gelded since. Second to the useful Almighwar on debut, Coltrane didn’t quite run up to that form on a return visit to Kempton but still looks a likely sort. Nostalgica was very green at Thirsk but ran an excellent race and will have come on a bundle for the experience. However, her race was run in a much slower time than the one in which RETROSPECT also finished fourth having made much of the running. Roger Varian’s gelding can improve again to land this ahead of Carausius, who wasn’t beaten far at Kempton over this trip.
