None of these are easily dismissed though recent Southwell winner Tigray finished behind LORD LAMINGTON when the latter won easily here a fortnight ago. Mark Johnston’s charge has a 5lb rise to contend with but Ryan Moore’s presence is a positive. Smarter was raised 14lb after romping home at Southwell but still went close at Newcastle last time. He’s upped in trip for this along with Emirates Empire and Withoutdestination, who both scored over 1m4f at Wolverhampton on their latest respective starts with the former preferred now handicapping after winning a maiden in good style.
Emirates Empire (IRE) 3-1 (8-7) Tracked leaders on outside, took keen hold, went 2nd 9f out, hanging right from 4f out, led over 2f out, drifted right in home straight, clear inside final furlong, comfortably, won at Wolverhampton 1m 4f mdn stks (5) pol in Apr beating Palladium (8-7) by 4 1/2l, 11 ran.
Smarter (IRE) 3-1 (9-3) Held up 4th, progress 3f out, ridden just over 2f out, challenged over 1f out, kept on inside final furlong, 2nd of 5, 1/2l behind Gantier (9-6) at Newcastle 1m 4f hcp (4) pol in Apr.
Lord Lamington 2-1 (9-7) Waited with in 3rd, closed 3f out to lead over 2f out, clear over 1f out, stayed on strongly, won at Chelmsford City 1m 5f hcp (5) pol in Apr beating Tigray (9-0) by 3l, 4 ran.
Withoutdestination 10-1 (9-8) Slow into stride towards rear, headway over 1f out, led approaching final furlong, ridden and ran on, all out, won at Wolverhampton 1m 4f hcp (5) pol in Apr beating Another Reason (8-8) by nk, 7 ran.
Tigray (USA) 9-4 (9-5) Soon in touch, headway over 2f out, ridden to lead over 1f out, kept on, won at Southwell 1m 4f hcp (5) pol in Apr beating Hurricane Hero (9-8) by 3/4l, 6 ran.
