Duty Free, who ran very respectably in the Ascot Stakes last month, can make the most of this return to a less exalted stage and is selected in preference to Numero Due and Mister Arjay. There may also be more to come from Pegasus Prince, who is at the right end of the weights and is likely to represent good value. However, he has never won on turf and does need to conclusively prove his stamina for two miles. Mister Arjay gained a deserved success at Catterick last week and is entitled to respect. A 6lb penalty leaves him vulnerable in this company, though. Numero Due stays well and has always been a highly regarded contender by George Moore. The stable's runners are thriving at present and this fellow will be hard to keep out of the frame if he runs his usual race. A similar statement has to written for Hits Only Vic, whose recent form figures are the best on offer. However, he has risen steeply in the ratings and now faces a very stiff test. Therefore, at the likely odds, Duty Free gets the nod on this occasion. Trainer Charlie Egerton is an extremely rare visitor to Beverley and it may be a significant clue that he comes here with Duty Free now that he has proven himself as a useful stayer. The gelding has an entry in the Ebor (optimistic at this stage) and a penalty would no harm in bolstering his claims to guarantee a run.
