In depth

Verdict

Roger Charlton's Ski Jump is given the narrowest of votes ahead of recent winners, Ravenglass and Parisien Star. Ski Jump has proved to be something of a Jekyll and Hyde character in the past. When he is good he looks as if he will carry all before him but when he is bad - he is truly awful to watch. With a step back to ten furlongs and fast ground likely, a trip to somewhere like Bath could well reignite his enthusiasm for the game. His victory over a similar trip at Leicester where he defeated Trouble At Bay and Rifleman looks very difficut to crab in the context of this race. Ravenglass produced his best effort for some time in landing a maiden here at Bath. He beat a useful type in Innovation but looks plenty high enough in the handicap at present. Roger Charlton trained the runner up and should have a line of form on him. Parisien Star looks more of a danger. The horse does tend to come to himself at this time of the season and he could be called the winner of his recent Goodwood race from a long way out. That was over nine furlongs and the jury is still out over his ability to stay ten. Most of Siena Star's form is on the polytrack at Lingfield. A bold bid was seen under top-weight at Chepstow when finishing second to Replacement Pet a couple of weeks ago but this form lacks credibility given that Lazzaz finished so close behind in third. Wind Chime has made light of the handicapper in the last couple of months to post a couple of recent victories at Warwick and Kempton. The handicapper has had plenty of chance to react to these and he faces a difficult task at a distance where he is yet to show any worthwhile form. In one of the trickiest races of the day, we shall opt to go with Ski Jump at bigger prices in the hope that he is on good terms with himself today.
