Omar Maretti jumped poorly on his final start last season at the Cheltenham Festival but can probably be forgiven that effort. He’d won in decent company at Newcastle and Catterick previously and still has time on his side. Marown looked a promising sort the season before last and was second on his reappearance here but exciting novice GOLD CUP BAILLY can give the weight away and make it 3-3 over fences, though Your Own Story is another with plenty of scope.
Gold Cup Bailly (FR) 10-3 (11-10) Jumped well, made all, going best 3 out, ridden and stayed on well flat, won at Ayr 2m 4f hcp (3) sft in Nov beating Doctor Ken (11-7) by 1 1/4l, 5 ran.
Omar Maretti (IRE) 9-1 (11-4) Prominent, hit 2nd, dropped to midfield next, slow 7th, hit 13th, struggling 16th, pulled up before 4 out, at Cheltenham 3m 2f hcp (2) sft in Mar.
Marown (IRE) 5-2 (11-7) Tracked leader until m11th, remained handy out wide, 2nd again 4 out, ridden and one length down at the last, stayed on same pace run-in, 2nd of 6, 1 3/4l behind Elvis Mail (12-2) at Ayr 2m 4f hcp (3) gs in Oct.
Your Own Story (IRE) 9-2 (10-10) Led 1st, headed 4th, midfield 7th, not fluent 14th, pushed along before 4 out, stayed on to challenge before 2 out, no extra after last, 4th of 9, 8 1/4l behind No Cruise Yet (10-2) at Haydock 3m 4f hcp (3) sft in Nov.
