Verdict

With most of the fancied runners drawn high, it may be worth taking a chance on Polar Magic to gain revenge over last year's winner New Seeker, with Hinterland and Mine needing to excel from their position. The outcome of Friday's heritage handicap on the track may throw some light on the effect of the draw, but there is no getting away from the fact that low numbers came out well on top at the Royal meeting. With that in mind, we fancy Polar Magic to oblige from stall five. James Fanshawe's charge was sent off as favourite in this event last year when it was run at Newbury, but disappointed as New Seeker dominated from start to finish. However he has had a much lighter campaign with this in mind, and will relish the fact that the recent rain has taken any jar out of the ground. New Seeker is a tough campaigner in these type of events, but now finds himself saddled with topweight. Even so he lines up in fair form and is not badly housed in stall nine. Hinterland has been all the rage for this but has to come from stall 20, and may not be as effective over seven furlongs anyway, while Mine, who like Michael Jarvis's charge carries a 3lb penalty, is also burdened with a high draw. Mind you, the Bunbury Cup winner was a gallant eighth in the Royal Hunt Cup from stall 30, so he could figure in the finish again here. Bayeux gave Gerard Butler a rare winner at Hamilton recently and is well drawn in stall one, while easy York winner Gallantry may make a bold bid for the frame on the stands side as well. In what will be the usual cavalry charge, we return to Polar Magic as the answer.
