SOUTH CAPE gets our vote with Pravda Street, Achak and Shaded Edge others to the fore of our thoughts. Golden Desert is the only winner in the last six years to have been sent off at less than 20-1; Katie Walsh is over to ride again and the gelding is just 5lbs higher so he has to rate highly given that he's been performing creditably ever since. The 2007 winner, Middlemarch, is also in the line-up and has dropped back to the mark from which he won this heat and his better efforts this season suggest he's not a forlorn hope. Pravda Street remains open to improvement after just nine career starts and he comes here on the back of a decent effort behind Captain Brilliance at Newmarket but he hasn't always appeared entirely straightforward. It would be no surprise to see Irish raider Achak emerge as the gamble of the race as he teams up with Nina Carberry for the first time. His recent run at Dundalk was his first since November so he was entitled to need the outing. Last year he gave the impression that he'd need the time to fill out so there may well be considerable improvement to come, particularly now that he's fitted in blinkers as he carried his head high when winning his maiden. Shaded Edge returns on the back of a shorter absence but runs well fresh so that's of no concern. He has been quietly progressive, has good polytrack form so could well be suited by the straight course and has an experienced pilot in the plate. That's something that the selection doesn't have but she claims 5lbs and he's 2lbs lower than when last successful before the claim is taken into account. He was a regular in the big Ascot handicaps for Mick Channon, often acquitting himself creditably, and South Cape is capable of making his presence felt in this line-up.
