      In depth

      Verdict

Bacchus will have to defy top weight if he’s to repeat last year’s success. Spring Loaded was only ninth last year but looks to have been laid out for the race this time. He goes well on the track, loves the hurly-burly of these big-field handicaps and has a useful 5lb claimer on board so should go well at a price. Recon Mission is pitched in against older horses after making all at York last week and carries a penalty but Cape Byron is one for the short-list. Roger Varian’s charge won the Victoria Cup here six weeks ago, though there is a chance he’ll get taken off his feet over this shorter trip. Gunmetal is more than capable off this sort of mark and a similar comment applies to Summerghand while Nottingham winner Danzeno was being well backed even before Frankie’s exploits this week. However, we’ll take a chance on HEY JONESY, who only weakened close home in a Group 2 at York last time. He wasn’t beaten far in the Commonwealth Cup here last year and later went close in Listed company at Doncaster. He is having a first run in a handicap over his favoured trip and Kevin Ryan has enjoyed notable success in similar races here in the past. Vanbrugh has been in good form but may be too high in the weights now.
