Verdict
Nuts Well proved his stamina over 3m at Kelso last time and was second in last year’s Melling Chase here. Clan Des Obeaux, who has had a light campaign and sports blinkers for the first time, bids to land this for the second year running and take revenge on Kemboy, who beat him in the 2019 renewal when Paul Nicholls’ charge was arriving off the back of a hard race in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Eldorado Allen beat Clan Des Obeaux and Royale Pagaille in the Denman Chase in February and then ran third in the Ryanair. The latter later finished fifth the Gold Cup and is closely matched with third PROTEKTORAT on that run but the Skelton runner won the opener on this card 12 months ago and was successful at the track again in December so might be the one to beat. Conflated would have placed in the Ryanair had he stood up and beat Kemboy in the Irish Gold Cup earlier at Leopardstown so is not out of this but Bristol De Mai clearly isn’t the force of old and has already been beaten three times in this contest.
