Wigan 1-0 Crewe: Wigan edge out Crewe thanks to Michael Jacobs goal
Saturday 29 August 2015 22:32, UK
Michael Jacobs scored the only goal as Wigan edged a north-west derby 1-0 against Crewe Alexandra at the DW Stadium.
The home side were ahead as early as the 12th minute, Jacobs rising to head home Max Power's left-wing corner from close range.
But Crewe were almost level within three minutes when Bradden Inman's strike from distance hit the inside of the post and somehow bounced out.
Jacobs was involved again midway through the half, beating two defenders before seeing his shot smothered by goalkeeper Ben Garratt.
The ex-Wolves man then had a shot parried into the air by Garratt, who was rescued by a clearing header by centre-back George Ray.

Wigan came closer still moments after the restart when Craig Davies' cross was headed against the post by Will Grigg.
Crewe remained a threat for the remainder, though, and it took a fabulous block by Donervon Daniels to deny Inman while substitute Laui Dalla Valle saw a header fly just wide of the Wigan goal inside the final quarter.
