Byfield brilliance settles contest
Darren Byfield produced a moment of class to give Walsall a 2-1 win over relegation-threatened Tranmere at the Banks's Stadium.
Byfield notched his ninth goal of the season after a dazzling run took him past two defenders in the 70th minute before he finished with a clinical shot past Luke Daniels.
The Saddlers had to come from behind to clinch their second double of the season after Rovers deservedly took the lead after 27 minutes when a low cross from Gareth Edds was deflected past his own goalkeeper by Manny Smith.
But Smith made amends for that 10 minutes before half-time when he met Steve Jones' corner with a downward header which found the corner of the net.
And Byfield piled more pressure on struggling Rovers with his brilliant individual effort 20 minutes from time.
Jones should added a third goal in stoppage time but he shot straight at keeper Daniels but his miss did not prove to be costly.
