Liverpool's Harry Wilson scored a late winner to give Wales a 2-1 victory over Armenia that moves them top of their European Under-21 Championship qualifying group.

Wilson struck in injury-time after Gor Malakyan had cancelled out an early penalty from Bristol Rovers striker Ellis Harrison.

Wales' place at the summit of Group Five may only be temporary as Romania will take over top spot if they beat Denmark at home on Friday night.

But Geraint Williams' unbeaten side now have 10 points from four games and will be in confident mood ahead of Romania's trip to Wrexham on Tuesday.

Wales' bright start in Bangor was rewarded after nine minutes when Wes Burns was brought down and Harrison converted from the spot.

Lee Evans and Wilson both went close to doubling the lead as the hosts dominated possession for long periods.

Armenia were restricted to one long-range shot in the first half but they equalised after 59 minutes when Malakyan headed Artem Simonyan's corner past Billy O'Brien.

The goal sparked Wales into a sense of urgency and Wilson, Burns, Thomas Lockyer and substitute Ryan Hedges all spurned inviting chances.

But just as it looked as if Wales would have to settle for a point, Wilson calmly placed the ball past advancing Armenia goalkeeper Anatoli Aivazov to claim a third victory in four qualifiers.
