United States' World Cup Qualifier with Mexico passed by without incident in the stands in Columbus as the visitors sealed a late 2-1 win.
There were fears that the atmosphere could turn nasty in Ohio following Donald Trump's surprise election as president, with Trump promising to build a wall between the two countries to stop illegal immigration.
However, the only action came on the pitch as Rafael Marquez's 89th-minute header earned Mexico, who ended the match with 10 men following Carlos Salcedo's late red card, the three points in round five of the CONCACAF qualification.
It had looked like being a draw as Miguel Layun's first-half goal was cancelled out early in the second half by Bobby Wood, but Marquez had the final say.
Costa Rica also got off to a winning start as they beat Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 in Port of Spain.
Christian Bolanos put them ahead midway through the second half when he tapped in from close range and then Ronald Matarrita made sure in time added on with a breakaway goal.
Meanwhile, Panama were 1-0 winners in Honduras as Fidel Escobar's 22nd-minute goal earned the points.
