French Ligue 1 match report: Marseille romp to glory

Michy Batshuayi scored a first-half double as Marseille thrashed Toulouse 6-1 on Friday to move above Paris St Germain and into second place in the Ligue 1 standings.

Batshuayi opened the scoring for the visitors in the second minute before Baptiste Aloe doubled Marseille's lead shortly after.

Toulouse defender Francois Moubandje's own goal made it 3-0 after just 20 minutes with Batshuayi finding the net again before the break as Marseille finished the first half with a commanding four-goal lead.

Wissam Ben Yedder pulled one back for Toulouse in the 76th minute but Marseille were not done, and Andre Ayew notched their fifth two minutes later, with Andre-Pierre Gignac's goal a minute from the final whistle adding the gloss.

The commanding win lifted Marseille above PSG and to within a point of leaders Lyon ahead of their matches against Lens and Montpellier respectively.

Batshuayi got Marseille off to the ideal start in the second minute when his left-footed strike from outside of the box found the bottom left corner.

Aloe doubled the score in the sixth minute with a shot from the middle of the area and soon after things went from bad to worse for the hosts when Dragos Grigore narrowly missed from a free-kick before Moubandje put the ball into the back of his own net.

Ayew missed a couple of chances for Marseille, who were dominating the match, but Toulouse did have some of opportunities of their own through Martin Braithwaite, who saw two shots blocked.

Marseille always looked likely to score again, though, and Batshuayi delivered in the 44th minute after a break upfield by Lucas Ocampos.

Ben Yedder gave the Toulouse fans something to cheer in the 76th minute when he slotted the ball through Marseille keeper Steve Mandanda's legs, but any celebrations the hosts had were short-lived as just two minutes later Ayew slotted home the away side's fifth goal.

Gignac then had the final word in the 89th minute when he raced into the box on his own, dribbled past Grigore and shot powerfully into the net to wrap up a comprehensive victory.
