Steven Davis struck twice as Southampton earned a 2-1 win at Tottenham and gave Arsenal a shot of finishing second.
Son Heung-min put Spurs in front at White Hart Lane after 16 minutes, capitalising on sluggish Southampton defending to round Fraser Forster and slot home.
Davis equalised for Southampton on 31 minutes and the Saints midfielder put his side ahead in the second half with a low finish past Hugo Lloris.
Tottenham had a late chance to salvage a draw, but a reflex stop from Forster kept out substitute Nacer Chadli's instinctive effort.
The victory moves Southampton above West Ham into sixth, albeit having played a game more. Meanwhile, Tottenham remain second on 70 points, two points clear of Arsenal, who drew 2-2 with Manchester City later in the day.
Spurs go to Newcastle on the final day of the season while Arsenal are at home to Aston Villa.
Spurs started on the front foot against Saints and only a fine save from Forster denied Christian Eriksen after six minutes, but the keeper was slow off his line when Spurs opened the scoring, allowing Son to nip past his challenge and tap into an empty net.
Despite the setback Ronald Koeman's side carried a threat on the break, and Dusan Tadic had already spurned one chance to tee up Davis before the Serbia international made amends for Southampton's equaliser.
Excellent against Man City last weekend, Tadic plucked the ball out of the air and crossed for Davis, who squeezed his effort past Lloris.
Both sides had opportunities before the break, the best falling to Harry Kane, who was denied by Forster after robbing Jose Fonte on the byline.
Long headed wide shortly after half-time as the visitors more than matched their opponents, and Koeman's side went ahead with 18 minutes to play.
Tadic was again involved, providing his sixth assist in his last four matches as Davis took his return pass and dribbled a shot through a clutch of Spurs defenders to find the bottom corner.
Southampton continued to look dangerous on the break as Spurs pressed forward, Long and substitute James Ward-Prowse firing over, but the final chance of the match fell to the hosts.
Deep into added time the ball broke to Chadli but Forster denied the Spurs attacker an equaliser with a save from point-blank range.
A win or draw for Southampton in their final match against Crystal Palace will see the Saints break their record points tally - currently 60.
As for Tottenham, their stunning season is in danger of petering out. They are winless in three games and face the prospect of entering the final weekend of the season level on points with Arsenal if the Gunners beat Man City on Sunday afternoon.
