League Two side go down to shoot-out defeat

Shrewsbury took Ipswich to penalties before going down to a shoot-out defeat in the Carling Cup. The League Two side twice came from behind to clinch a 3-3 draw, only for Roy Keane's men to claim a 4-2 victory in the shoot-out. Connor Wickham was handed his first start for Ipswich and scored twice for the Tractor Boys, the 16-year-old striker opening the scoring with a crisp right-foot drive in the 11th minute. Shrewsbury equalised through a 12-yard snapshot by Jake Robinson before Dave Hibbert spotted Shane Supple off his line to lob the visiting goalkeeper with a stunning 25-yard volley and put the Shrews in front. Ipswich pulled level when Alan Quinn scored from a 20-yard free-kick in the 32nd minute and they regained the lead in the 59th minute after more intricate footwork from Wicham, who found the corner with a left-foot strike from inside the area.

Late equaliser

Shane Cansdell-Sherriff made it 3-3 with 16 minutes left as he hit a left-foot volley on the turn which went in off the far post. Shrews substitute Omer Riza had a good chance to wrap up the tie in extra-time but fired wide with only Supple to beat. Jon Walters converted the first penalty in the shoot-out for Ipswich while Robinson was denied by Supple from the home side's first spot-kick. Ipswich went on to score all four of their penalties before Graham Coughlan fired over as Shrewsbury's brave effort finally came to an end.
