Sweden booked their place in the semi-finals after a comfortable 3-1 win over Serbia in Malmo.

Hosts to face England in last-four

Hosts Sweden booked their place in the semi-finals of the European Under-21 Championship after a comfortable 3-1 win over Serbia in Malmo. The Swedes only needed to avoid defeat to make it through, and they did what was needed as they claimed maximum points which gives them a semi clash with England. Sweden face England as Italy top Group A after beating Belarus 2-1. In an action packed first-half in Malmo's New Stadium, Marcus Berg cemented his place at the top of the goal-scoring charts with two goals. One of Serbia's leading lights Gojko Kacar pulled one back just before the half-hour - but their hope was fleeting as Ola Toivonen restored their two-goal lead just 60 seconds later. The previously impregnable Serbian defence was undone just seven minutes in when the unmarked Berg swept home the ball after good work down the left from the impressive Emir Bajrami. A big decision then came on 15 minutes when Sweden won a penalty. Nenad Tomovic brought down Bajrami - there was no doubting the foul, but it was very much on the edge of the area. But referee Pedro Garcia had no doubts and pointed to the spot and Berg stepped up to slot it into the corner.

      Bundled

Serbia finally showed some attacking intentions and they found a lifeline on 28 minutes. Kacar saw his excellent header tipped over the bar by Johan Dahlin. But Dahlin then came and missed the resulting corner and Kacar was there to bundle the ball over the line. The lifeline Kacar gave Serbia, though, was wasted as just seconds later Sweden countered and Toivonen cruised though before clipping the ball past Zeljko Brkic. Any hopes Serbia had of getting into the game suffered a huge blow on the stroke of half-time when Tomovic was dismissed for bringing down Bajrami. The second-half saw Sweden dominate and Berg only just missed a good chance to convert his hat-trick, before Serbia were reduced to nine-men. Central defender Nikola Petkovic was given a straight red for a crude challenge on Toivonen which saw him lead with his arm. Thereafter Sweden cruised home into the last-four, indeed the only negative point was the yellow-card picked up by the highly impressive Bajrami - who will now miss the semi-final clash with England.
