Roma tightened their grip on the last Champions League qualifying place with a 3-0 triumph at Sassuolo on Wednesday evening.

Seydou Doumbia put the visitors on their way in the sixth minute before Alessandro Florenzi doubled Roma's lead in the 27th minute as the Giallorossi scored more than one goal in a league game for the first time since February 8.

Miralem Pjanic put the game beyond Sassuolo's reach by scoring the third with 16 minutes to go.

The outcome at the Citta del Tricolore stadium has kept Roma in third place and lifted them five points clear of Napoli, who take on Empoli on Thursday.

Roma are one place and one point adrift of city rivals Lazio, who beat Parma on Wednesday to remain in second place.

Sassuolo were without their top scorer Domenico Berardi through suspension but still managed to create six goalscoring opportunities although they were denied by the good goalkeeping of Morgan De Sanctis.

Sassuolo are without a win in their last four league games and are 15th in the standings, 12 points clear of the drop zone.

Roma went in front when Doumbia got past his marker and headed Pjanic's cross past goalkeeper Andrea Consigli.

Pjanic remained heavily involved and in the 27th minute he set up Florenzi in the box.

The Italian midfielder struck the ball into the top left corner of goal and out of Consigli's reach.

Sassuolo almost reduced the arrears one minute later when Antonio Floro Flores spotted Nicola Sansone in the area but his right-footed shot was saved by De Sanctis.

Before the interval, Sergio Floccari wasted a good chance when he struck the ball off target with only De Sanctis to beat.

Sassuolo came to life in the second half and in the 50th minute, De Sanctis did well to clear Sansone's stinging drive from outside the area.

De Sanctis then kept out Floro Flores' long-range attempt as the home side grew in confidence.

Before the hour, Simone Zaza shot from the heart of the area towards the far post but De Sanctis was equal to the task.

Six minutes later, Floro Flores' powerful header from Saphir Taider's cross forced De Sanctis into another save.

Just when Sassuolo were playing at their best, Roma added to their tally.

Gervinho fed Pjanic in the box and he struck the ball past Consigli to cap off a good night for the Romans.
