James Tavernier's strike was not enough to prevent Wigan from slipping to a 2-1 friendly defeat at Rochdale.
A youthful Latics side fell behind after just five minutes when Dale winger Iain Henderson chipped Lee Nicholls from a tight angle. Bastien Hery made it two in the 36th minute when he skipped past a couple of challenges before firing past Nicholls. Just before the break Tavernier chested down a ball 25 yards out and crashed a drive in off the underside of the bar, but Wigan could not find an equaliser.
