Dani Carvajal's dramatic extra-time winner secured Real Madrid's second UEFA Super Cup title in three years as they beat Sevilla 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Sevilla looked set to triumph at the Lerkendal Stadion having overturned Marco Asensio's stunning opener (21) with goals by Franco Vazquez (41) and Yevhen Konoplyanka from the penalty spot (72).

Sergio Ramos forced extra time with a close-range header in the 93rd-minute, and momentum swung completely in Real's direction when Sevilla defender Timothee Kolodziejczak was sent off after receiving his second yellow card shortly after the restart.

In the battle between Champions League and Europa League winners, Sevilla looked set to hold on for penalties, but Carvajal broke their hearts in the 119th minute, condemning the Andalusian side to their third consecutive defeat in a Super Cup final.

With just over 10 days until the start of the La Liga season, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale each missed out, offering their young replacements an opportunity to impress Zinedine Zidane.

Zidane's side had enjoyed the better of the early exchanges, with Ramos and Asensio both going close before the latter's opener.

When the equaliser did come, it was courtesy of another fine piece of finishing as Vazquez found the bottom corner of Kiko Casilla's net with a low drive.

Substitute Konoplyanka then put Sevilla in front, sending Casilla the wrong way from the penalty spot after Vitolo was fouled by Ramos.

The Real Madrid defender made up for his error, though, snatching a stoppage-time equaliser to head past Sergio Rico and send the final to extra time.

Kolodziejczak, who needlessly picked up a yellow card moments before Ramos' leveller, received his second yellow just three minutes into extra time, leaving his side a mountain to climb.

Ramos had a goal disallowed for a pull on Adil Rami as Real pushed for a winner, and they eventually broke Sevilla's stubborn resistance with less than 90 seconds to play.

Carvajal stole possession from Konoplyanka on the half-way line and drove into the Sevilla box, beating the onrushing Rico with a lifted finish worthy of winning any final.
