Rangers came from behind to keep up their 100 per cent Championship record as Martyn Waghorn scored a last-minute winner to defeat Queen of the South 2-1.

The home side failed to make their pressure count in the first half and fell behind when Derek Lyle broke the deadlock.

But after Jason Holt levelled after the interval, Waghorn struck in injury time just a minute after he looked to have blown the chance of a win when he missed a penalty.

Mark Warburton's team stays maintains their nine-point gap over second-placed Raith, while Hibernian are two points further adrift but with a game in hand.

With Rangers winning each of their first nine league matches this season, it was no surprise they dominated in the early stages of their 10th.

Barrie McKay, deployed on the left flank, was a particular nuisance to the visitors, whose acting right-back Kyle Jacobs struggled to contain the winger.

McKay's final ball wasn't always the best but he found Lee Wallace who shot wide, while Waghorn's low shot was smothered and James Tavernier was blocked on the edge of the area.

Andy Halliday suffered the same fate as the away side sat deep and absorbed pressure from the Championship leaders.

Queen of the South's forays forward were few and far between but they weren't far from taking a surprise lead when Alex Harris shot just wide from 18 yards on the break.

Rangers hit back, with Waghorn's curled effort clawed away by Robbie Thomson before Wallace tried his luck once again but didn't trouble the keeper with his weaker right foot.

Warburton's side paid for their lack of ruthlessness when they fell behind to a slack goal 10 minutes before half-time.

Derek Lyle - sent off the last time the sides met in August - had a much better moment as he latched on to Chris Higgins' flick from Ryan Conroy's corner to slot in unmarked at the back post.

Queens' lead came against the run of play and it clearly dented Rangers, who were suddenly struggling to build any momentum as they chased an equaliser.

It took until after the break for the home team to come close to restoring parity and they should really have made it 1-1 through Kenny Miller.

Tavernier swung a deep free kick from the left towards the back post but the striker couldn't connect and moments later Waghorn was kept out by a terrific Thomson save.

Rangers were applying pressure though and eight minutes into the second period they were back on terms again.

Jason Holt was the scorer, staying onside to run on to Tavernier's through ball and finish well with his third goal of the season.

McKay missed a chance to put Rangers ahead from Miller's cross moments later while Holt's shot from substitute Nicky Law's cutback was helped behind for a corner.

A Tavernier free kick was held on the line by Thomson, Wallace shot past the post and Dominic Ball nodded wide from Waghorn's set piece.

Waghorn then had a penalty well saved by Thomson after Halliday was fouled in the area and with that it seemed the chance of victory had gone.

But just a minute later the striker made amends as he rose highest to nod in Nathan Oduwa's cross to win the game.

It was Rangers' 50th goal of the season and their first from a header, something which keeps their good run going - if only just.
