Rangers 4-0 Alloa: Gers return to winning ways after Hibernian defeat

Martyn Waghorn scored twice as Rangers bounced back from defeat to Hibernian to defeat bottom club Alloa 4-0 at Ibrox.

The loss at Easter Road last weekend was Rangers' first in the Scottish Championship this season, but they recovered well and proved too strong for Alloa on Saturday.

James Tavernier and substitute Nicky Clark also got on the scoresheet, while the visitors had Eddie Burns sent off in the closing stages of the game.

Mark Warburton's side were ahead after 11 minutes; Alloa goalkeeper Andrew McNeil kicking the ball straight at Waghorn, who controlled neatly before volleying home.

The Gers' second goal soon followed as Tavernier curled a powerful free-kick round the wall and into the net two minutes later after Ferns had fouled Andy Halliday 25 yards from goal.

Rangers continued to press and almost scored again through Waghorn, but the former Wigan striker Waghorn missed a sitter when, in front of an empty goal, he somehow managed to completely miss a cross from Tavernier.

Alloa then had the opportunity to pull a goal back after Dominic Ball appeared to catch his studs in the turf, only for former Cardiff and Sunderland striker Michael Chopra to fire his shot against the crossbar.

The visitors were duly punished; Waghorn scoring his second goal of the game and Rangers' third when he got on the end of Barrie McKay's cross to volley home a minute before the break.

Waghorn came close to a hat-trick five minutes into the second period but his shot was saved by McNeil after Tavernier had played him in with a neat pass.

Jason Holt then fired wide after latching onto a loose ball before Waghorn was again denied his treble score following more good work from Tavernier.

Alloa found themselves a man down for the final 11 minutes after Edward Burns was dismissed for a foul on Gers substitute Jordan Thompson.

A hat-trick continued to elude Waghorn, who saw a shot cleared off the line, with Thompson then curling just over the crossbar.

Rangers were not to be denied, however, with Thompson's fellow substitute Clark completing the scoring in stoppage-time.
