Goals from David Moyo and Kaid Mohamed earned Northampton a 2-1 Johnstone's Paint Trophy win at Portsmouth.
Moyo gave Northampton the edge in the 28th minute when he swept Darren Carter's through ball in off the post. But Ryan Taylor levelled in the 36th minute when Alex Wynter found the former Rotherham forward in space in the box and the Pompey number nine slotted coolly under Cobblers goalkeeper Jordan Archer. The Cobblers edged back in front in the 55th minute though when Lawson D'Ath's cross from the right served up a simple tap-in for substitute Mohamed. Northampton nearly extended their advantage when Ryan Cresswell's header from Joel Byrom's corner crashed off the Pompey crossbar with 20 minutes to go. A poor Dan Butler throw then allowed Cobblers' Alex Nicholls a clear run on goal but Pompey stopper Paul Jones stood up superbly and parried his shot behind. Portsmouth boss Andy Awford was irate minutes later when D'Ath scythed down Ricky Holmes and was controversially only handed a yellow card by referee Graham Horwood. But Northampton controlled the game in the closing stages to dump the Blues out of the competition.
