Valiants two-good for Rovers

Jennison Myrie-Williams' brace sent Port Vale into the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy with a 2-0 win over Tranmere.
Vale boss Micky Adams selected an unchanged starting line-up for a fifth successive game and it showed with a quick and confident start. Clayton McDonald should have scored when he headed over in the sixth minute and Louis Dodds blazed wide of a gaping net two minutes later. Dodds also had one effort ruled out for offside and headed another opportunity inches over the top as Vale dominated the first half. Tranmere, with four changes from the side which thrashed Colchester 4-0 at the weekend, continued to struggle before Vale took a 57th-minute lead. Zoumana Bakayogo tripped Richard Duffy 25 yards out and Myrie-Williams drove an unstoppable left-foot shot into the top right-hand corner of Owain Fon Williams' net. The contest was as good as over in the 75th minute when Roman Golobart handled a cross from Vale substitute Adam Yates and Myrie-Williams sent Fon Williams the wrong way from the penalty spot. Tranmere substitute Cole Stockton breathed some life into his team in the closing stages but it was too little, too late.
