Port Vale 1-0 Plymouth: Nathan Smith wins it for the Valiants
Saturday 14 September 2019 19:50, UK
Nathan Smith's second-half goal earned Port Vale a 1-0 win over Plymouth.
The game looked to be heading for a draw until defender Smith met Richie Bennett's short cross and headed the ball in from close range.
Ryan Lowe's Plymouth, now without a win in three league games, had the better of the opening period, with Byron Moore's effort parried by goalkeeper Scott Brown.
Vale used all three of their substitutes in the first half when David Amoo, Tom Conlon and Callum Evans were forced off through injury.
John Askey's side upped the ante in the second half, with Leon Legge closest to breaking the deadlock for Vale, heading over the crossbar, moments after Cristian Montano drew a fine save from Plymouth goalkeeper Alex Palmer.

Former Vale forward Moore and Danny Mayor went close for the visitors before Smith's 76th-minute winner.
Montano then missed a gilt-edged chance to kill the game, but Smith's strike proved to be enough for Vale.
