Port Vale 1-0 Lincoln: Antony Kay seals vital win
Saturday 14 April 2018 21:38, UK
Port Vale all but secured their League Two status with a hard-fought win over promotion-chasing Lincoln.
Defender Antony Kay scored the only goal of the game as the Valiants moved nine points clear of the drop zone with just three games left to play.
The goal came after 63 minutes when Kay rose highest to meet David Worrall's chipped free-kick and guide the ball past the static Ryan Allsop into the net.
The home side had signalled their intent after just eight minutes when Cristian Montano had two quick-fire shots deflected before Luke Hannant sent the final rebound curling wide.
Lincoln did grow into the game and almost took the lead on 28 minutes when Elliott Whitehouse met Matt Rhead's low cross, but hammered his shot past the upright.
The EFL Trophy winners continued to press for an equaliser and it took a superb save from Sam Hornby after 79 minutes to deny Matt Green from 25 yards out and secure all three points for Vale.
