Poland 1-2 Netherlands: Vincent Janssen and Georginio Wijnaldum strike for Dutch
Wednesday 1 June 2016 22:57, UK
Poland suffered a setback in their Euro 2016 preparation with a 2-1 loss to Netherlands in Gdansk, thanks to goals from Vincent Janssen and Georginio Wijnaldum.
Janssen's header had given the visitors the lead after 33 minutes before Artur Jedrzejczyk ensured Poland were back on level terms in the second \half.
But a late strike from Newcastle midfielder Wijnaldum handed the Poles their first defeat in eight games.
Netherlands, who failed to qualify for this summer's tournament for the first time since 1984, began the game on the back foot as Arkadiusz Milik blasted his effort on to the crossbar after seven minutes.
Danny Blind's side gradually grew into the match as a swift counter attack saw Dutch midfielder Quincy Promes set-up Janssen but the AZ Alkmaar striker could only scuff his shot wide of Wojciech Szczesny's goal.

But Janssen, who scored 27 goals to lead the Eredivisie goalscoring charts last season, made no mistake with the opener as he was able to head in Steven Berghuis' cross from close range.
Szczesny ensured the hosts were only one goal behind at the break as he produced a smart one-hand save to deny Janssen before stopping Berghuis' effort two minutes later.
Poland, who thrashed Finland 5-0 in their last match in March, came out the blocks with more urgency in the second half as influential forward Robert Lewandowski skied his shot over the crossbar.
And they were level on the hour mark when FC Krasnodar defender Jedrzejczyk leaped highest to power his header past Jasper Cillessen.
The hosts pushed numbers forward but went behind against the run of play after 76 minutes as Wijnaldum found space inside the Poland area before he spun and blasted his effort into the top corner.
Netherlands' pace and movement threatened once again as Promes' curling strike was tipped away by Szczesny before Poland midfielder Slawomir Peszko saw his shot deflected wide late on.
