Keith Curle suffered his first defeat as Notts County manager as Sheffield Wednesday edged a hard-fought encounter 2-1 at Meadow Lane.
The first half was played in front of a lively atmosphere as 4,500 Wednesday fans made the short trip down the M1, but there were few clear-cut chances in a scrappy opening period, with only a Michail Antonio shot into the side-netting for the visitors worrying either goal. Wednesday took the lead in the 53rd minute when Antonio's long run with the ball went unchallenged and his cross was tapped home by striker Ryan Lowe. The Owls doubled their lead in the 66th minute as the County defence failed to deal with Lewis Buxton's throw-in and Gary Madine turned smartly and steered the ball into the bottom corner. County gave themselves hope in the 88th minute when a curling free-kick from Alan Judge was diverted in by on-loan Leeds winger Lloyd Sam, but Wednesday held on for three vital points.
