Nottingham Forest 2-2 Brentford: Mathias Jorgensen's stoppage-time own goal saves point for hosts

Nottingham Forest goalscorer Morgan Gibbs-White says they were "cheated out of the three points" after Saturday's last-gasp 2-2 draw with Brentford at the City Ground.

Bottom-of-the-league Forest were heading for defeat after Yoane Wissa lobbed Dean Henderson to make it 2-1 with 15 minutes to go until Mathias Jorgensen's chaotic own goal (90+6) saved a point for the hosts in the final minute of stoppage-time.

Gibbs-White's deflected strike (20) had opened the scoring for Forest, before Bryan Mbeumo converted from the penalty spot (45+3) - after referee Andre Marriner changed his on-field decision thanks to VAR intervention - with Henderson deemed to have clipped Wissa.

"I think we got cheated out of the three points," said Gibbs-White, while his head coach, Steve Cooper, added: "We feel hard done by, that is pretty plain to see."

Brentford had their first away league win of the season snatched away from them at the death, but move up to 10th while Forest remain rooted to the bottom of the table, two points from safety.

How Forest rescued a point

Forest set out to hurt Brentford on the counter-attack and caused the visitors major problems for most of the first half. Gibbs-White was the orchestrator for the hosts and his performance was rewarded with a shade of luck as his shot took a deflection off Ben Mee for after 20 minutes to break the deadlock.

Brentford were handed a route back into the game when referee Marriner awarded them a penalty for Henderson's challenge on Wissa when the forward was through on goal. Forest's players were incensed and crowded the official, having seen multiple penalty appeals waved away already themselves.

With usual penalty-taker Ivan Toney suspended, Mbeumo assumed spot-kick duties and converted with ease, sending Henderson the wrong way to keep up Brentford's 100 per cent record from the spot in the Premier League. No side has scored as many goals from penalties in the top-flight without missing.

Referee Marriner was booed off at half-time by the Forest fans as tempers ran high at the City Ground. The hosts' afternoon took another turn for the worse when Wissa perfectly timed his run to meet Mathias Jensen's chipped through ball before spotting Henderson off his line and giving Brentford the lead with 15 minutes to play.

Forest pushed hard for an equaliser, having been the better side for large parts of the game, and finally got the breakthrough in the sixth minute of stoppage-time when Gibbs-White's shot ricocheted off Jorgensen and into the net - despite the best efforts of Mee on the line.

Brentford are still searching for an away win in the Premier League this season and are now on a four-game winless run. The Bees have particularly struggled on the road since losing Christian Eriksen to Manchester United. The last league game they won on their travels without the Dane came against West Ham on October 3, 2021.

Gibbs-White: We were cheated out of three points

"It was really frustrating. I thought we had full control of the game for the full 90 minutes and I think stats will prove that.

"I think we got cheated out of the three points. We deserved three points. The boys played unbelievably and it was just two errors that cost us."

Cooper: Hard to bite my tongue over penalties

Nottingham Forest head coach Steve Cooper said Brentford's penalty should not have stood, but as it was given his side deserved three spot-kicks themselves.

Emmanuel Dennis, Ryan Yates and Gibbs-White all had penalty appeals turned down, with VAR refusing to intervene in any of their cases as it did with Wissa's in first-half stoppage-time.

"We played really well in the first 35 minutes and I thought we were good for the lead," said Cooper. "I thought if anything we should have been more [goals up].

"I didn't like the last 10 minutes of the first half, we made some unforced errors that gave Brentford some decent positions, which were self-inflicted.

"You're going to ask me about the penalty decisions. My feeling is, if he gives one he has to give four. We feel the one on Emmanuel Dennis in the first half is worse, we feel the one against Ryan Yates in the first half is worse than the one that was given against us and then on Morgan Gibbs-White in the second half.

"We feel hard done by, that is pretty plain to see. The system let the referee down, more than a little bit. Luck went against us in terms of the officiating.

"But I am also looking at the last 10 minutes of the first half and the goals that we conceded. The first one is unlucky, but we shouldn't let them get into that position. The second one is poor defending.

"Great to show heart and soul at the end of the game and keep going and get something out of the game. But I have real mixed feelings about how the game went today and I am finding it hard to bite my tongue."

Frank: Tough goal to take in stoppage time

Brentford head coach Thomas Frank:

"That's tough to take when you are leading with six minutes of stoppage time and you don't get the win.

"I'm very proud of the team, we were a little bit down to the bare bones. Three of our four captains - Norgaard, Pontus and Ivan - were out.

"Kristoffer Ajer and Aaron Hickey were also out, Vitaly Janelt we had to take off at half-time, Jensen hasn't trained the whole week. So other players stepped in at a difficult away ground.

"It is very noisy here. We went 1-0 down, Liverpool did that two weeks ago and couldn't come back. The way we approached the second half made me very proud and pleased."

Frank claims coach was injured in pre-match altercation

Frank said his goalkeeping coach was injured after a pre-match altercation with a Nottingham Forest groundsman.

He claimed Manu Sotelo has marks on him after an argument with a member of the groundstaff before kick-off of the 2-2 draw and accused Forest of disrupting their pre-match warm-up.

Frank said: "It surprised me a little bit, not that I am an experienced, experienced Premier League manager, but in all my time in football and especially all my time in the Premier League I have never, ever, ever seen a groundsman walking around in the middle of our warm-up doing things.

"I don't know if that is a coincidence, but it just surprised me very much. I have never seen that. I hope they do that every time, against Liverpool and West Ham.

"He got a mark. I don't know what, something gave him a mark and I have even got a picture. I have a bit of a temper so I am not an angel all of the time and I try to be the best version but my goalkeeping coach is the most down-to-earth guy, there must be something really p*****g him off.

"I just hope everyone is looking into it. There must be cameras. I don't know if you have seen it before or if it is a common thing."

Forest boss Steve Cooper said he was aware of the incident but did not want to comment.

Nottingham Forest host Tottenham in the Carabao Cup third round this Wednesday. Kick-off is at 7.45pm. Steve Cooper's side then welcome Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday November 12 at 3pm.

Brentford will be visited by League Two club Gillingham in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday with kick-off at 7.45pm. The Bees end their pre-World Cup Premier League rota with a trip to champions Manchester City on November 12 in lunchtime game at 12.30pm.
