Jamie Carragher: Liverpool's 6-1 defeat at Stoke embarrassing ahead of long summer
Monday 25 May 2015 08:22, UK
Jamie Carragher says Liverpool’s 6-1 defeat by Stoke on the final day of the season, their worst-ever Premier League defeat, was “embarrassing”.
On Steven Gerrard’s last game for the club, Brendan Rodgers’ side were 5-0 down at half-time at the Britannia Stadium, something Carragher admits is unacceptable.
Rodgers has in the past received the backing of the Liverpool board despite a disappointing season, which they have finished in sixth place following a second-place finish last term, but Carragher says it will be a long summer ahead.
He said on Sky Sports: “It’s an embarrassing result for Liverpool.
“Before the game there was a bit said, that there’s not a lot riding on it. On the back of that result there might be a bit riding on it now.

“I think the owners have mentioned that Brendan Rodgers goes over for a chat, as I’m sure every manager does with an owner at the end [of a season].”
“The owners have come out and backed Brendan Rodgers after the [FA Cup] semi-final [defeat].”
Liverpool end the season four places and 22 points worse off than 2013/14, having lost Luis Suarez to Barcelona and Daniel Sturridge to injury for the majority of the season.
And former Liverpool defender Carragher admits the summer is not a good time to be going on the back of your last result.
“It doesn’t help, it hasn’t been a great season," he added. "It’s a long summer to be on the back of your last result. Being 5-0 down at half-time is not acceptable.”
After leaving the studio, Carragher went on social media to give more thoughts on the Liverpool result, saying: "Embarrassing day for all connected with Lfc 6-1 is not acceptable. Not seen anything but my son left at half time so it must've been bad!"
