Garry Monk satisfied with Swansea progress in record season

Swansea City boss Garry Monk has expressed his satisfaction with his team after they achieved their highest finish and number of points in a Premier League season.
Monk was talking after a 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace and although he was disappointed, the defeat made no difference to their eighth-place finish in the league.
Monk said: “The highest finish and points total in the Premier League. There have been so many positives, we’ve played exceptionally well – although not in this game.

“Everything I’ve asked of the players, the way they have stuck together and the quality as a team has been fantastic and it’s something to build on next season.”
The Swans have finished eighth, which leaves them just outside the European places with a total of 56 points during a season which has seen them do the double over both Arsenal and Manchester United.
Monk admitted that both teams were disappointing at Selhurst Park, but that didn't take away from a record-breaking season.
He added: "It was a disappointing game, there wasn’t much in it. I said to the players at half-time that it would probably be decided by a mistake.
"Unfortunately, it was us that made the mistake. I think Bafetimbi [Gomis] got a little shove in the back, I think from Chamakh - who went onto score. I don’t think either team played particularly well.
"We’d made a lot of changes, and had a lot of young lads involved and missing a lot of key players. That’s not an excuse, it’s just the way it is for us at the end of the season. I thought our commitment and effort was there again but we didn’t really create much."
Monk was correct as his side created five chances, with only two of those on target.
The Swansea manager added: “That prep has been going on for a while, pre-season and the following season. It will be very difficult to match or surpass what we’ve done this season.
“But we will take one step at a time. Like all teams, survival is the most important thing and then we’ll take it from there.”
