After Chelsea confirmed their status as Premier League champions on Super Sunday, Eidur Gudjohnsen joined Ed Chamberlin to discuss some familiar scenes at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues sealed the title with three games remaining after Eden Hazard’s strike gave them a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Gudjohnsen won back-to-back league titles with Chelsea under Mourinho and told the Ed Chamberlin Audio Blog - recorded from the Sky Sports studio at Stamford Bridge – the players won’t realise how good it feels until they look back on their careers.
“It feels the same around the place,” he said.
“Even some of the players I played with are still here, which is amazing – I see John Terry and Didier Drogba celebrating, Petr Cech’s here and obviously Jose’s here as well.
“I must admit it did bring back a few very fond memories.
“As you’re playing and as you’re still at the club, you don’t exactly realise what it means to you.
“When you leave and after it’s all been done, that’s when you start to treasure these moments even more.”
Gudjohnsen signed for a second spell at former club Bolton in December, and started on Saturday as they lost 1-0 to Birmingham on the final day of the Championship season.
He also recently returned to the Iceland national side after 18 months out of contention, and the 36-year-old says he still enjoys playing, with a place at the Euro 2016 finals an ideal way for him to finish his career.
“I absolutely love it,” he added. “I came back into the Iceland team a month ago, and it made me realise you only play once, you might as well enjoy it for as long as you can.
“I’m physically very fit, don’t have any injury problems – no little niggles that give me any setbacks. While I’m physically able to do it I’ll play for as long as I can.
“Making a comeback with the national team gave me great pleasure and we’re in a very good position for the Euros, so it does give me a lot of incentive to carry on.
“We came so close to going to the World Cup, then we were beaten by Croatia in the play-offs, and it’s the one thing missing a little bit from my career.
“Iceland have never qualified for major championship, so to be part of that and finish my career on that note, it’s like I would have written the script myself.”
