Jermain Defoe won the Tyne-Wear derby with one of the best volleys ever scored in the Premier League.

Jermain Defoe scored one of the all-time great Wear-Tyne derby goals on Sunday as his sumptuous volley clinched a 1-0 victory for Sunderland.

In stoppage time in the first half of the Premier League clash at home to Newcastle, a long ball was headed on to the former England striker by team-mate Steven Fletcher and Defoe showed fantastic technique to volley home from outside the area.

The superb effort sealed the Black Cats' fifth-consecutive victory over their fierce rivals and eased the mounting relegation fears at the Stadium of Light.

Thierry Henry says Jermain Defoe's goal was a wonderful strike

Defoe, who moved to Wearside from MLS side Toronto FC in January, put a two-month spell without a goal firmly behind him.

Such was the importance of the goal, and the occasion, the former England striker was tearful as he left the field at the interval.
