Luis Suarez’s selfless style is what makes him such a great player, according to Manchester City full-back Gael Clichy.
The Barcelona striker scored the winning goal as the Catalans beat fiercest rivals Real Madrid 2-1 at the Camp Nou to move four points clear at the top of La Liga on Sunday.
Clichy has himself faced the Uruguayan on numerous occasions, most recently in Manchester City’s Champions League tie with Barcelona, and was full of praise for the former Liverpool man.
“That is the sort of player he is, of course he is a great player but he gives everything for the team,” he said.
“This run (for the goal) is the one we will remember but he probably did 10 or 15 runs like this in the game where he didn’t get the ball.
“It’s part of the job of a striker and he is a great striker. You have to expect when you give him a chance, he will hit the target.”
While Suarez is in fine form with seven goals in his last seven games, Cristiano Ronaldo has struggled to reach his incredibly high standards of late and, despite him scoring the Real Madrid goal, Alex Song was not impressed his performance.
“Apart from the goal I don’t think he did very well tonight,” said the former Arsenal midfielder. “He was not the great Ronaldo tonight.
“I didn’t see something special. The game wasn’t a great game, neither side played the level you expect tonight and maybe that is why (Ronaldo struggled).”
