Tim Sherwood says he needs more time to help his team find the goals to keep them up

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood admits he needs more time to help the club find the goals in their battle against relegation.

Villa, who parted company with former boss Paul Lambert earlier this month, are second bottom of the Premier League table.

We need to go out and do it for ourselves and if we can get as many points as possible then we're going to fail trying, that's for sure.

Former Tottenham head coach Sherwood inspired his new club to an FA Cup win against Leicester, following a half-time team talk after watching the opening period from the stands, but his first official game in charge ended in a disappointing 2-1 home defeat to Stoke last weekend.

Villa travel to Newcastle on Saturday as they go in search of a first top flight victory in 12 games and Sherwood says there won't be a lack of effort from his players.

"We've had five days training," he told Sky Sports News HQ. "Of course it's going to take time. I've managed for one game and scored one goal - good ratio.

"We've got as much time as we can. Whatever time is left we have to get the job done.

"They're obviously very disappointed (after the Stoke defeat). I hope they share the same disappointment as I had although they showed the disappointment to the fans.

"We need to go out and do it for ourselves now and if we can get as many points as possible then we're going to fail trying, that's for sure."

Villa are the lowest scoring team in the top flight having hit just 13 goals in 26 games this season.

Cristian Benteke has contributed just two of those and Sherwood threw down the gauntlet to the Belgium hitman ahead of their trip to the north-east.

"I want to see him take the matchball with a hat-trick and throw it back in people's faces," he said.

"Teams should be scared of him. They've got memories like me. I remember him terrorising defenders. We need to get him back to that. He's only young.

"We don't want to try to patronise him, we want to try to tell him some home truths, 'you were one of the best strikers in the country and everybody wanted you, Aston Villa didn't want to sell you and now we need to get you back to
that.' It's in there. It's not a flash in the pan, it's embedded into him.

"He scores one in two. He's a prolific goalscorer and we need to help him. The rest of the group need to help him - but we need to find goals from other areas as well."
