The Football Association is to help Crystal Palace track down the supporter responsible after Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini was struck by an object on Wednesday night.
The Argentinian defender was hit by what appeared to be a coin as the Newcastle players celebrated their goal in a 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park.
The FA will not take disciplinary action against Palace but will help them to track down the perpetrator and CCTV footage will be analysed as part of this process.
And the FA will expect a lengthy ban to be handed to anyone found guilty.
Newcastle head coach John Carver was furious about the incident and said after the match: “It just can't happen can it?

"It has got to be taken out of the game. What is disappointing from their point of view is that they have an unbelievable crowd here, an unbelievable atmosphere. It is a fanatical group of supporters in that corner.
"It takes one idiot to throw a coin. I have seen it and it misses Colo's eye by an inch. Another inch and it could blind him."
Palace manager Alan Pardew said: “It would be a shame if that was an incident, a random fan acting poorly.
“That is unusual for this club if that is the case, because we have a great record of behaviour, so I am sure we will look into it.”
