Jermain Defoe is pleased to have hit the ground running at his new club

Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe admits he is feeling sharp after scoring his second goal for the club since his return to the Premier League.

The 32-year-old scored his second Black Cats' goal in three Premier League starts in the 1-1 draw at Swansea, becoming the first player to register against every one of the 20 clubs in the top flight.

Defoe's arrival has certainly lifted Sunderland and the Wearsiders battled for a precious point in south Wales after winning back-to-back games against Burnley and at Fulham in the FA Cup for the first time this season.

You're getting your fitness and sharpness in games, and I think at the minute I'm feeling sharper and sharper with each game.

The former Tottenham striker has wasted little time settling in at his new club after joining from Major League Soccer side Toronto FC and manager Gus Poyet believes the player can resurrect his England career after finding his goal-scoring form for the club.

However, Defoe says he is just happy to be back to full fitness and playing top flight football again. He told Sky Sports: "I just want to help the team, contribute as many goals as I can and just make sure my movement is good.

"I feel sharp at the minute and managed to get a goal today, so hopefully it will continue.

"I had a mini pre-season and worked really hard to get myself ready in case anything happened and obviously I got myself an opportunity to come to a massive football club and I was delighted.
