Steve Bruce rues 'awful' mistake in Hull's 1-0 loss at West Brom

Hull City boss Steve Bruce believes his side did enough to get something out of their trip at West Brom, but was left frustrated at the 'crazy' goal which turned out to be the winner.

The Tigers appeared to be heading for an away point until a 78th minute back-pass from Ahmed Elmohamady was picked up by Allan McGregor, with Saido Berahino smashing home Victor Anichebe's resulting indirect free-kick.

Defeat sees Hull drop in to the Premier League relegation zone after wins for both Crystal Palace and Burnley, but Bruce feels the result doesn't reflect the performance. 

“It’s hugely disappointing and hugely frustrating more than anything,” Bruce said. “It’s one of those awful moments that you don’t see very often.

“You take a point away from home and get on with it, but unfortunately we’ve made an awful mistake and got punished for it.”

“It’s one of them crazy ones, when you lose a game of this magnitude to a goal like that, because I can’t remember either keeper really having a shot to make."

Bruce, making eight changes from last weekend’s FA Cup defeat at Arsenal, had to make his 1000th Premier League substitution in the first half at the Hawthorns as Nikica Jelavic suffered knee injury, before Adel Hernandez hobbled off with a groin problem just minuted later.

“The one thing you really don’t want to do in a game of this importance is lose your strikers.

“Last week against Everton, Hernandez and Jelavic were a handful, but today we’ve lost the two of them within 20minutes – to go on top of Diame, Ramirez and Aluko in particular.

“Our goal threat has been taken away from us, so we huffed and puffed after that but never really created or looked like creating the chance.

“I’ve used more players this year probably than I have in five years in terms of numbers, but we have to get on with it.

“We did enough to get something out of the game here with all of the problems, so in that respect, we’ve just got to keep on going."
