Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has suffered knee ligament damage and will miss Wednesday's Champion's League clash against Roma.
The Argentine was substituted just two minutes into the 1-0 Premier League home victory over Everton on Saturday following a collision with Gareth Barry and was immediately taken down the tunnel for treatment.
Manager Manuel Pellegrini confirmed the extent of the injury after the game and admitted there is some concern over the club's top-scorer this season.
"Sergio has a problem in his knee ligament. We will see how serious it is after he has had a scan," Pellegrini told Sky Sports.
"It is not good news and I don’t think he will be able to play next week. He will not be with us for Roma – which is an important game.
"He was more calm when I saw him after seeing the doctor but generally we are not sure how he is."
At the time of the knock, Sky Sports’ pitchside reporter Geoff Shreeves said: “Aguero appeared to be grimacing and holding his left leg, and he went straight down the tunnel after he left the field.
“City say it is definitely his left knee but that it was not an impact injury - it was caused moving away from the tackle.
"He is still being assessed and City say they won’t know the extent of the damage for two or three days. It sounds ominous.”
Aguero was making his 20th City appearance in all competitions in a season in which he has scored 19 goals, and City went on to win the game through Yaya Touré's first-half penalty.
City captain Vincent Kompany, forward Stevan Jovetic and midfielder David Silva are all racing to be fit for the game in Italy, which is live on Sky Sports 5HD from 6pm, having suffered calf, leg and knee injuries respectively. Silva has been out since October.
