Everton are still waiting to discover the full extent of Gareth Barry’s ankle injury.
The 33-year-old midfielder was stretchered off in the 13th minute of the Toffees’ 1-1 draw with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.
There were initial fears that Barry had broken his leg, but X-rays confirmed there was no break.
However, there is some ligament damage which cannot be fully assessed until the swelling has eased.
The former England international will continue to have treatment at Everton’s Finch Farm training complex but the club are hopeful he will only be out of action for weeks rather than months.
With James McCarthy sitting out Republic of Ireland training on Tuesday after complaining of a hamstring problem following the match at Sunderland, manager Roberto Martinez will be watching the forthcoming internationals closely.
